The Rome & Floyd County Civil War Symposium Series returns this Thursday to the Rome – Floyd Public Library with two of the foremost Civil War authors in Georgia.

Barry Brown and Gordon Elwell, authors of Crossroads of Conflict: A Guide to Civil War Sites in Georgia, will give an overview of the publication and the research it took to develop the book.

The presentation will also highlight some of Rome & Floyd County locations of historical significance. Featured in the guide are First Presbyterian Church of Rome, Fort Norton at Jackson Hill, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, the Noble Brother Foundry (current location of Southeastern Mills) and Cave Spring.

The symposium will begin at 6:30pm in the Coosa and Etowah rooms with a book-signing following the presentation. The symposium is free and open to the public. Books for signing and other civil war merchandise will be available for purchase.

The guide was released by the University of Georgia Press in association with the Georgia Civil War Commission, the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Humanities Council.

Since publication in 2010, the guide has received numerous accolades.

“The commentary is concise and written with feeling. The book is an indispensable traveler’s companion,” said Brandon H. Beck, Director of the McCormick Civil War Institute at Shenandoah University.

“In the hot summer of 1864, the outcome of the Civil War was decided right here in Georgia. Crossroads of Conflict shows you where to find the war today, from battlefields to historic sites and museums. It’s the indispensable guide for the 150th Anniversary of the war in Georgia,” said Gordon Jones, Senior Military Historian for the Atlanta History Center.
