The first installment of the Civil War Symposium Series will be held this Thursday in the Rome/Floyd County Library Coosa room at 6:30pm. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Dan Roper, publisher and editor of Georgia Backroads, will present the first symposium. His lecture will focus on Rome’s involvement in the start of the war and secession. Roper is a respected local author and historian with over 80 published articles on Georgia history and travel.

The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with the Rome Floyd County Library to present a Civil War Symposium Series throughout 2011. The series celebrates Civil War heritage during the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States.

The future symposiums of the 2011 series will feature Barry Brown of the Georgia Civil War Commission, Zack Watters, local historian, and Margaret Hollingsworth and the Cochran Family, Civil War performers.
