The John Wisdom Wagon Train & Trail Ride will return to Rome this weekend for the thirty-first year.
The ride commemorates the heroic ride of mail carrier John Wisdom. In 1863, he rode 11 hours on horseback from Gadsden to warn Rome of an impending attack during the Civil War. Because of this action, Rome was saved from early destruction.
The Wagon Train & Trail Ride will depart Rome’s Ridge Ferry Park on Saturday, October 16 at 8:30am. The train of horses and wagons will travel to Shannon, Ga. Tickets are $10 and coggins papers must be shown in order to participate.
The Wagon Train & Trail Ride returns to Rome at 5pm for the Grand Parade down Broad Street.
The day’s celebration concludes with a Cowboy Dance at 8pm at Ridge Ferry Park. Admission is $5 and the band Running Wild will perform.
