From the Rome News-Tribune

The theme for this year's Christmas in Rome Parade will be “A ‘Green’ Christmas - Recycle, Reuse and Renew.”

Participants are encouraged to use recycled and reused materials in the construction of their floats.

“We feel this theme will bring out a great deal of creativity in the community but will also be a theme where people can express themselves by renewing the spirit of Christmas,” said Christmas in Rome Committee Chairman Jerry Rucker said.

The committee had a contest this year and area residents were able to submit their suggestions for a theme on the parade website. The winning entry was submitted by Leanne Chambers and she will receive a check in the amount of $25.

This year’s parade will be on November 30 with a rain date of December 2.

It will begin on Broad Street at First Avenue and end on Broad Street at Sixth Avenue.

Applications are now available on the website at www.romechristmasparade.com. All participants must get their applications on the website. The entry fee is $25 and all applications are due in by November 10th. After that date, a late fee of $50 will be charged.

Proceeds from this year’s parade will be used to enhance the beauty of Rome and Floyd County during the holiday season. The committee is introducing a “Light Up Rome” campaign to encourage residents and public areas to make our community glow during the Christmas season. Chairman Rucker stated, “Many people enjoy visiting communities to see their array of Christmas lights during the season. We would like to see Rome become one of those cities known for its beautiful lights in our historic neighborhoods, public places and along our rivers. We hope donations from the community will help our efforts this year to start with purchasing lighting for the new footbridge and Town Green area.”

To make a donation to the Light Up Rome effort, go to the website after September 1st at www.romechristmasparade.com. and designate your donation for “Light Up Rome.”
