FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
New marker at Myrtle Hill to be dedicated on Saturday
Rome, Ga. — M.H. Mitchell, Inc., a non-profit preservation group, will dedicate a new marker in Myrtle Hill Cemetery on this Saturday, February 11, at 11:00am.
Located in the Historic Civil War section of the cemetery, the marker will stand at the grave of Col. George Washington Lee and explain his significance. Lee saved the State Archives of Georgia just days following the beginning of Sherman's March to the Sea.
The marker will read: "Col. George Washington Lee (1831-1879) on November 18, 1864 engineered the train carrying the State Archives of Georgia safely from Milledgeville to Augusta and kept them from Federal capture."
A short dedication ceremony will be performed by David Mitchell of H.M. Mitchell, Inc. and Stan Rogers of the City of Rome Cemetery Department.
The mission of M. H. Mitchell, Inc. is to raise awareness of the South’s unique history by providing financial grants for the maintenance of historical structures, historical grounds, and historical places. Through involvement on every level, especially small projects that are just as important as big, widely publicized projects, the organization is committed to helping future generations understand and appreciate their past.
