Rome, GA

Stage one of the 2010 Clocktower Classic Handcycling Race led racers up Lavender Mountain in rural Floyd County. Racers faced a 5-9% incline within a racing distance of 2 miles. Beginning at 10am on Friday, April 30, 2010, the timed-trial allowed racers to achieve an average speed of 13.5 miles per hour because of the steep incline up the mountain.

Dane Pilon of Fayetteville, North Carolina completed the course first with a time of 13:55.2 minutes. Local racer Krige Schabort from Cedartown took the second fastest time of 14:50.2 seconds. Scott McNeice of St. Petersberg Flordia rounded out the top three with a time of 15:15.0 minutes.

Friday evening holds the most exciting race of the staged series: The Downtown Criterion. Portions of Broad Street, Second Avenue, Fourth Avenue, and East Fourth Street will be closed for the races. Spectators may view the race from any of streets.

Special events associated with the downtown race will be held in the Annex parking lot behind the Harvest Moon restaurant across from the bus station.

About U.S. Handcycling:
United States Handcycling Federation, is an association of individuals and organizations that creates integrated cycling opportunities for wheelchair users and athletes with lower-mobility impairments, including disabled veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

About Paralyzed Veterans of America:
Sixty-three years ago, Paralyzed Veterans of America was founded by a band of spinal cord injured service members who returned home from World War II to a grateful nation, but also to a world with few solutions to the challenges they faced. These veterans from the Greatest Generation made a decision not just to live, but to live with dignity as contributors to society. They created Paralyzed Veterans, dedicated to veterans’ service, medical research and civil rights for people with disabilities. And for more than six decades, Paralyzed Veterans and its 34 chapters have been working to create an America where all veterans, and people with disabilities, and their families, have everything they need to thrive. Please visit www.pva.org to learn more about our work.

About the U.S. Handcycling Series:
The U.S Handcycling Series is the premier Para-Cycling racing series in North America and will feature more than 150 of the World’s top cyclists with disabilities, racing at major – integrated – cycling events across America. Shining the spotlight on the elite athleticism of Paralympic cyclists, this series focuses on the “ability” rather than the “disability” of its participants, most notably disabled veterans.
