Final Civil War Symposium of year on Thursday
ROME, GA. — The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau will host the final Civil War Symposium of 2011 on Thursday, November 17, at 6:30pm in the Coosa room of the Rome / Floyd County Library. The event will feature a performance of Civil War era music by the Cochran family and readings by Margaret Hollingsworth.
The Cochran family is made up of seven siblings age 3 - 18 who sing and play a variety of string instruments. They will be performing popular songs of the time and expounding upon the historic details of the songs and their composers.
Hollingsworth will present a reading from her ancestor's diaries. One diary by Edith Simmons was composed while she was 16 years old and living in Cave Spring. Her future husband, Wesley O. Connor, also recorded his stories while serving in the Cherokee Artillery. He later went on to serve as Superintendant of the Georgia School for the Deaf for over fifty years.
The series is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and hosted by the Rome - Floyd County Library. The goal of the series is to educate the community on the area's rich Civil War history during the sesquicentennial of the war.
The schedule for the 2012 series is currently being completed and will be available mid-December.
