FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Civil War symposium announced for Farmer's Bridge
ROME, GA. — The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau (GRCVB) announced a new addition to the Civil War Symposium Series in Rome & Floyd County. Dan Roper, a local historian, will provide a free lecture on the history of the Battle at Farmer's Bridge on Saturday, November 5 at 11am.
The symposium will be held in New Armuchee Cemetery off Highway 27 near Armuchee Elementary School.
Farmer's Bridge was the location of the only span across the Armuchee Creek between Summerville and Rome during the Civil War. On May 14, 1864 a battle broke out on the site following the Battle of Resaca nearby. During the battle, ten confederate soldiers were killed.
Until 1999, the graves of the soldiers remained unidentified. Researchers from the Sons of Confederate Veterans identified their graves and placed a marker in their honor. The November 5 event will mark the 13th anniversary of the marker's dedication.
The free symposium will begin at 11am on November 5. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for seating and park along Scenic Road near the cemetery.
