Tickets now on sale for Civil War river tour
ROME, GA. — Set sail on Rome's three rivers on Sunday, October 23, to learn the historical significance of the waterways during Spirits of the Civil War: Rome's Riverways.
Aboard the Roman Holiday, Rome's public excursion boat, guests will experience the city's historical vistas from a unique perspective and understand the power that the waters held in fighting Union Forces during the 1860s. The tour will show the major features of the riverways that were used for both troop transportation and defense blockades during the Civil War.
Captain Dennis Nordeman of Rome will lead the cruise down the river sharing local lore, key Civil War events and the Roman response to the war while pointing out the geography and various landmarks along the way.
“It was not always a land battle; as much of the war strategy in Rome centered on its rivers," said Nordeman.
There will be one tour departing at 3:00pm from the Heritage Park dock, lasting approximately two hours. Space on the Roman Holiday is limited to 44 guests. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $2 for children under 12. Passengers are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure and to dress comfortably, wearing rubber-soled shoes.
The event is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and the City of Rome as part of a 5-year commemoration series to educate citizens and visitors on the significant civil war history in Rome & Floyd County.
