FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Visitor center to celebrate American Craft Week
ROME, GA. — The Rome - Floyd Visitor Center and the Last Stop Gift Shop will celebrate American Craft Week on October 10 - 14 by highlighting local artists, authors and jewelry makers.
The goal of American Craft Week, sponsored by Craft Retailers & Artists for Tomorrow (CRAFT), is to bring together individuals, small businesses and organizations from all fifty states in recognition of the countless ways handmade objects enrich our daily lives and contribute to our national aesthetic and economy.
On Monday, October 10, the gift shop will highlight eco-friendly company Lil’ Sprout Knits who uses only organic materials to create quality items. Owner Alex Locke-Norton hand-crafts beautiful baby rattles with animal motifs, hand-knit baby bibs, as well as hair accessories for little girls and more. The cotton used in Locke-Norton’s merchandise has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and is proudly made in the USA.
Beverly Thurmond’s Southern Bottlelites will be showcased on Tuesday, October 11. The wine bottles appeal to a variety of consumers offering customized options at a reasonable price. Recycled bottles and Christmas lights provide the backdrop for Thurmond’s art, which features everything from collegiate sports teams and Rome’s very own Clocktower, to just about any design imagined.
On Wednesday, October 12, the gift shop will highlight Happi Caps, the brainchild of local artist Tracy Davis. The inventive jewelry give customers the opportunity to personalize chokers and bracelets. Choose a bottle cap with your favorite sports team, hobby, or even dessert, along with an accompanying stretchy necklace/bracelet, and voila!—a great gift for yourself or someone special!
Local author Larry R. Cauthen, M.D. will be featured on Thursday, October 13. His work chronicles the stories of the Roberts clan with his trilogy, The Transients: Five Generations of a Southern Family. Dr. Cauthen focuses on the life and times of main character John Charles Roberts and a family deeply embedded in Southern tradition. The Transients takes the reader through most of the twentieth century, demonstrating how time and circumstance cause the evolution of a Southern family. Set in northwest Georgia, all three volumes are available for purchase.
On Friday, October 14, the local organization DIGS will showcase their handmade home and garden art. The group for adults with developmental disabilities creates beautiful garden art, fun home decor and stationary. Proceeds from the sales of these items go towards housing funding for the developmentally disabled. When a DIGS item is purchased, a lasting contribution is made to the cause and to the community.
The Last Stop Gift Shop is located inside the Rome - Floyd Visitor Center at 402 Civic Center Drive adjacent to the Rome Civic Center. For more information, call the Last Stop Gift Shop at 706.295.5576.
