FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Annual event to celebrate local Civil War hero

ROME, GA. — The John Wisdom Wagon Train & Trail Ride will return to Rome on October 15 to celebrate the legacy of the Civil War for the thirty-second year.

The ride commemorates the heroic ride of mail carrier John Wisdom. In 1863, he rode 11 hours on horseback from Gadsden to warn Rome of an impending attack during the Civil War. Because of the "Paul Revere of Rome," the city was saved from early destruction.

The Wagon Train & Trail Ride will depart Rome’s Coosa Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 15 at 8:30am. The train of horses and wagons will travel to Shannon, Ga on a 23 miles ride. Tickets are $10 and available at entry. Coggins papers must be shown in order to participate.

The day’s celebration concludes with a Cowboy Dance featuring Backwater Band at 8pm at the fairgrounds . Admission is $5. Camping is permitted at the fairgrounds on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Contact the Rome - Floyd Visitor Center at 706-295-5576 for more information.
