FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Former shipmates to honor Admiral Towers

ROME, GA. — The USS Towers Association will hold a portion of its annual reunion in Rome, Ga. on September 16 to honor the namesake of their United States Navy ship, Admiral John H. Towers of Rome. The group will hold a short ceremony that is open to the public in front of City Hall at 10:15a.m.

The USS Towers Association is composed of shipmates from the USS Tower DDG-9, a guided missile destroyer serving from 1961 until 1990.

2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the commission of the USS Towers and the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation.

Towers is widely considered to the Father of Naval Aviation. Born in Rome in 1885, he graduated from the US Naval Academy and went on to become the Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics.

He made important contributions to the technical and organizational development of Naval Aviation, and is one of the few pioneers of aviation to survive the extreme hazards of early flight and later retire from the Navy.

Following their ceremony in Rome, the group will enjoy a lunch at WinShape Retreat and a guided tour of the Between the Rivers Historic District. The reunion will also be visiting Atlanta attractions such as Stone Mountain and  Civil War Heritage sites.
