FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Civil War Symposium to feature youth cavalry company

ROME, GA. — The Rome and Floyd County Civil War Symposium series will return on Thursday, August 18 with local historian and author Zack Waters. The symposium begins at 6:30 in the Coosa room of the Rome - Floyd County Library. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Waters,  author of A Small but Spartan Band: The Florida Brigade in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, will give a presentation on the cavalry company known as Gartrell's Georgias. The company was a group of teenagers aged 15-17 who formed in late 1863 at Rome by former mayor Henry A. Gartrell.

They traveled to Mississippi in 1864 and joined General Nathan Bedford Forrest's command, serving as part of Forrest's personal escort. Their history and fate will be explored during the symposium.

The series is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau and hosted by the Rome - Floyd County Library. The goals of the series is to educate the community on the area's rich Civil War history during the sesquicentennial of the war.
