Three events added to Civil War commemoration
ROME, GA. – The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau announced on Wednesday that three new events have been added to the Spirits of the Civil War tour series.
On June 16, the GRCVB will team with Southern Paranormal Investigators to present evidence for paranormal activity throughout the former site of Fort Norton on Jackson Hill. Actual Civil War history will be compared to the findings of the night-long investigation. The event begins at 7pm in the Civic Center. Tickets are $5 and the program is not recommended for children under 12.
On October 23, Civil War enthusiasts will take to the water to discover the significance of the waterways to Rome during the Civil War. During Spirits of the Civil War: Rome's Riverways, troop transportation and defense blockades from the era will be explained while aboard the Roman Holiday, a 55-passanger boat led by Captain Dennis Nordemam. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
Finally, on November 17, Farmer's Bridge in Armuchee will feature a candlelight walking tour. Spirits of the Civil War: Farmer's Bridge by Candlelight will highlight a battle between Federal and Union troops on May 13, 1864 that left 10 confederate men dead. Attendees will visit various locations throughout the area to learn of the battle from site hosts. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children.
The GRCVB also announced that tickets are still available for Spirits of the Civil War: Jackson Hill & Fort Norton on June 11, 2011. The event will feature reenactors explaining life at the fort and a lecture on its historical significance by Dan Roper, publisher of Georgia Backroads. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. The tour is a moderate to strenuous walk with steps and very steep slopes involved. Bring blankets and chairs.

Discover striking images of the Civil War through this exhibit of photographs from the Library of Congress. Memorial Day Parade
May 30, 2011, Broad Street
The 8th Regiment Band will present a concert at the Memorial Day Ceremony in Myrtle Hill Cemetery followed by parade.
The parade is a celebration of the men and women who have served in the United States Military. During the Civil War anniversary, special consideration will be placed on the War Between the States. Grand Marshal of the parade will be US Marine Corps Major General John M. Croley.
Spirits of the Civil War: Jackson Hill & Fort Norton

Jackson Hill is one of Rome’s richest sites in Civil War History. Learn about the soldiers who served Fort Jackson, identify fortifications and experience the impassioned stories of the fort. The Cochran Family will perform Civil War era music and explain its meaning and significance. Margaret Hollingsworth will present a reading of her ancestor’s love letters from the Civil War. Free.
Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails Marker Dedication
Late summer, time TBA; Site of Noble Foundry near South Broad Bridge
Join the dedication of the new sign and informational marker at the site of the Noble Foundry, one of Rome’s most important Civil War sites because the famous cannon factory led to Rome’s burning. The dedication will also mark the addition of Rome to the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trail system.
Eighth Regiment Band Concert
TBA, DeSoto Theatre
The 8th Regiment Band will present a a concert featuring full dress in Civil War Confederate Uniforms and Civil War era instruments. Concert will begin at 3pm. $5 admission.
