Miss Annie Lee - An Original Cannon of the Noble Foundry

Returns to Rome for her 150th Anniversary

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Cannon firings at 9:30am; 12:30pm; 5:30pm; and 7pm

FREE and open to the public

Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the production of an authentic Noble Cannon. Only approximently 70 cannons were produced in Rome, Georgia on the banks of the Etowah River at the Noble Foundry. Miss Annie Lee is in original condition and conducts regular firings 150 years after her birth in Rome. 

Following the 7pm firing, a mini concert will be provided by the 8th Regiment Band, a reenactment band wearing period dress and playing authentic Confederate instruments and music. A guest of honor, Robert Noble, will also present words. He is a direct decendent of the brothers that founded the Noble Foundry. 

The cannon is provided by the Macbeth Light Artillery of South Carolina. Additionally, members of the N.B. Forrest S.C.V Camp will be in full Confederate uniform.

Spirits of the Civil War: Rome's Riverways

September 9, 2012 2pm; Departs from Ridge Ferry Park dock

Explore Rome's vast river system of the Oostanuala, Coosa, and Etowah aboard the Roman Holiday, a passenger boat. The tour will show the major features of the riverways that were used as both troop transportation and defense blockades during the Civil War. Limited number of seats available.Cost: $8 adult, $5 children.Call 706.295.5576 to reserve tickets.

Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails Marker Dedication

Late summer, time TBA; Site of Noble Foundry near South Broad Bridge

Join the dedication of the new sign and informational marker at the site of the Noble Foundry, one of Rome’s most important Civil War sites because the famous cannon factory led to Rome’s burning. The dedication will also mark the addition of Rome to the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trail system.

The Red Stain of the Land: Alcott and the Civil War

September 13; 6pm; Etowah Room of the Rome / Floyd County Library

Dr. Jonathan Atkins and Dr. Tina Bucher, Berry College, will discuss abolitionism and the Civil War in Rome and Floyd County.  Dr. Bucher will focus on Hospital Sketches, Louisa May Alcott’s fictionalized account of her time as an army nurse, Alcott as an abolitionist and how her writing advanced social reform.

 

Where Romans Rest: Myrtle Hill Cemetery Tours

October 15; 10am, 10:30am, 11am, 11:30am; Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Discover the rich history of Myrtle Hill Cemetery and its permanent residents as you explore the multiple terraces on a guided tour. Along the way, several residents will make appearances and share their story.

Haunted on Broad

The lecture by local historian and author Mike Ragland will highlight the Union occupation of Rome during 1864. 

 

  Winter Forlough

March 1, 2012; Rome City Auditorium

The 8th Regiment Band, Georgia Volunteer Infantry / 8th New York National Guard Band will present a concert of 19th Century American music on 19th Century instruments at the Rome City Auditorium on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 730PM. ‘Winter Furlough’ commemorates the opportunity troops had each winter to go home, take time off from the battlefield or to recuperate from injuries. The concert is a major fundraiser for the band to continue its mission of bringing 19th Century American brass band music to the people of Northwest Georgia and the nation during the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States. Come hear some of your old favorites and new ones never before performed by the band. The concert is free and open to the public but donations are desperately needed. Kennesaw Mountain Sutler will be on site offering a selection of period and patriotic items in appreciation for your donation. For more information call Jim Belzer at 706-346-4446 or John Carruth at 706-232-4567.

Travel through the Civil War history of Georgia’s Rome by visiting residents of Myrtle Hill Cemetery wearing period dress and telling stories of their experience during the Civil War in Rome. Please note: this tour is a moderate to strenuous walk with steps and slopes involved. Cost: $5 adult, $3 children (12 and under).
